If your home is built with your basement below ground level, it is always important to consider waterproofing the area to prevent future disasters. When ground water builds up around your home, it can cause moisture and leakage first entering the basement. The moisture can lead to mold structural damage and cause a really bad mess. With the proper waterproofing techniques you can prevent the damaging aftermath, especially this winter.

Basement flooding most frequently occurs during the rainier seasons – Spring and Fall – so the best times for waterproofing are often during the Summer and Winter. Before the cooler weather really hits, it is important to take a look around your home. Keep an eye out for any moisture on the walls or signs of mold or mildew. More often than not, home owners do not realize there is an issue until after the damage has already been done.

As the snow approaches, remember to keep basement windows clear from snow. This will help throughout the winter and come springtime when the snow will melt and likely cause the most damage. When there is snow pushing up against the windows, it can add pressure causing moisture to build up and additional leakage. The moisture from snow can also cause ice to form underneath, eventually causing additional water against the foundation of your home.

Along with waterproofing, be sure to keep up the maintenance around your home. Cracks around the house, particularly the basement, should be sealed so that the winter moisture does not find a way in.  Basement windows can be sealed and covered with plastic to prevent additional leaks. This will also keep heat from escaping through the basement and help maintain a warmer house temperature. Lastly, make sure you know where your pipes are. Frozen pipes tend to cause problems within the basement – knowing where they are located and how to turn them off can prevent them from bursting and causing basement flooding.

Basements contain the key components to your home – electrical, plumbing, heating and more. Don’t let moisture ruin these assets to your home and ensure that your property stays safe.
